More biological resources are needed to study PC
Although relatively uncommon worldwide (2.5% of all forms of cancers), its poor prognosis ranks PC the fourth or fifth in malignancy mortalities. Surgery is still the main treatment for PC, but only 15% to 20% of PC patients can be resected at diagnosis with a poor prognosis after resection. Although the currently available adjuvant therapies appear to provide a survival benefit, they are only moderate and standard protocols have not been established. On the other hand, PC stimulates a pro-fibroproliferative response in vivo, thereby expanding the space between tumor cells with reactive non-tumor components (e.g., inflammatory cells and fibroblasts), and reducing the number of viable cancer cells available in each macroscopic field of view. Based on this biological nature, only 53 PC cell lines are currently available in this research area. Not to mention, some available cell lines are already outdated. Therefore, there is an urgent need to establish and develop more biological resources to facilitate the study of PC.

The derivation and short-term culture of solid tumor primary cells are of great importance in individualized cancer therapy. Newly established pancreatic cancer cell lines may provide sufficient models for studying the broader biological and molecular features of PC. We have established cell culture-based methods for tumor cell isolation and expansion for further molecular and functional testing, including in vitro 2D and 3D culture systems.

Molecular characterization of cultured cancer cells is performed by various methods and functional assays including cell viability and drug sensitivity assays.
